Gardens Founded in 2001 - Home in 2002

Echinacea - Photo by Laura Davis

The garden began in 2001 with the help of Norm Erickson, a Northland Hospice volunteer, at the corner of Switzer Canyon Drive and Turquoise. At that time the home had not been completed but a beautiful sign was placed on the corner. Norm continued to work on the beds on the east side of the sidewalk along Switzer Canyon Drive and in front of the home, until 2008. The rest of the gardens were developed by a core of Coconino County Master Gardeners initially led by Laura Davis and since 2007 by Loni Shapiro.

The garden crew is active from April-October and sometimes in November weather permitting. Work happens weekly throughout the garden season on Monday and Thursday mornings from 8:00 am-12:00 pm. It also is scheduled for one Saturday a month from April through October. Cancellations due to weather will be posted by 6:00 am of the workday on this blog. You must attend a spring orientation to the garden and Northland Hospice & Palliative Care in order to work. A summary of the work that has been done is included on the blog. Look for weekly postings on this blog during the garden season.

February Garden Meeting Minutes

Hospice Garden Meeting Agenda
February 21, 2013 9am-1030am
9am-930am (coffee/tea available)
Introductions done.  Attending: Loni Shapiro, Betty Marcus, Judith Chaddock, Debbie Crisp, Rebecca Davis, Joe Harte, Diana Watt, Megan Woodson, Christine Orr, and Vicki Goodwin. I have recorded your hours.

I.             Updates
                A.            Financial status for end of 2012
Our balance is currently 3136.06 (much of that is from 2011 about $900 from last year).
We also have a balance of 1084.03 in our Warner’s account.
Dave Hill has said he is willing to make another garden donation this year.
We have earrings for sale again and Linda is making some pendants and necklaces. We have already collected $135. No other fundraisers will be done this year. No plant sale! If you know someone who needs something we have too much of, tell them to contact me and we will arrange for them to dig some up. We will focus on gardening.

                B.            Need a new coordinator for the 2014 garden season.  This will be my last year – anyone interested? I am trying to do fewer hours in 2013 (450 last year) so I am looking for people to assume responsibility for gardens and special projects for 2013 (coordinate, clean up, plant or replant as needed). We will have new volunteers to help you.
If you have any tips on possible coordinators for 2014 let Loni know. A sharing of the task – 2 people- may make it easier to find someone.  She would like to get someone on board before the end of the season. She will attend the MG class next month and Hattie is also looking for someone.
MMG & Tea Garden – Laura
Laura is working ½ time at FMC as a patient advocate. We will see less of her in the garden this year and most likely on Mondays. Loni will be meeting with her to work out routines that can be done by other gardeners in both areas.

Moon Garden, Zane’s Garden, New Hummingbird/Penstemon bed, Sensory Pots – Loni
Moon garden needs a small expansion, the Hummingbird garden will be the garden along Switzer north, the last to be revised in front. Hodge Podge will be helping with a memorial for a long time volunteer including a bird bath.
Veggies & Herbs & Fruit – Rebecca Davis ? (should be 2 people)
Rebecca  (new volunteer from Hozhoni)has agreed to work on this but she will need help.  Loni will look for 1 more person in the MG class. Rebecca may also do some Native American plantings (corn-beans and squash).
                                                Faerie Garden – Vicki
This will be mostly set-up and fill in of any missing plants.
                                                Rock Garden/Compost – Linda
Compost may be in the garage to avoid entering the house and decrease odor.
                                                Irrigation – Linda & Carol
The MMG needs irrigation lines set up.
Front ½ Circle and new front bed – Kay ? (needs help as she is still working)
Kay will be back this season – unsure of her availability as yet.
                                                Rose Garden
Becky will coordinate this with the help of Hattie Braun, Marion Lopez, and Loni

Native Garden (north end of house)
We may have a new coffee table/bench for this area with tags for long time residents.  Loni will look at it next week and get a photo. It is currently in storage. We need to decide where it should be placed during our walk through in March (very heavy). Diana will have a crew from the fire department move it.
Corner Garden (all will help with the plan but getting the work done)
Inferno Strips (includes planting new area with added sidewalk)
Shed Area (all will help with the plan but getting the work done)
Walk through of all above on March 14th at 9am. Looking for people to coordinate the work on all three.
                                                Indoor Plants – Judith
                                                Trees – Joe
Volunteer reports to NHPC - Julie
Creating sandstone Pathway from Switzer sidewalk to Rose Garden –
                                                                AMERICORP?
Someone may be interested in this but if not we will try to get AmeriCorp/ or CREC to do it as a project. We have sandstone from last year.

                C.            Benches
As mentioned earlier a stone bench may be put in the native garden. This will be moved from NHPC storage. Someone suggested a bench along the new trail would be nice to let someone stop and take a rest. We will leave that on our wish list.  Our last replacement bench has been ordered and arrived. It just needs to be assembled.
Another bench request has been added to the wish list for the area near the sheds. It needs to be rod iron or cement. We would like it to be more decorative than our recycled benches.

930am-1030am
II. NHPC/HIPAA updates – Megan Woodson, Volunteer Coordinator
Several handouts given out (OW Hospice Brochure, General Hospice info brochure, HIPAA(info, quiz, and sign off), power point info for presentation). Megan provided further information on HIPAA and the mission of NHPC, collected HIPAA quizzes, had people sign new application forms, and some filled out forms for background checks (Betty, Judith, Christine, and Vicki). Megan will check on those that have done this before – Loni, Nancy Palmer, and David Hockman.

These are requirements for 2013 for all regular gardeners.
1.  Fill out a new application.
2.  Annual proof that one is free of signs/symptoms of TB
Choose 1 of 3 methods:  skin test done by NHPC, Chest x-ray, note by either MD or DO declaring your are free of TB. If you have already had this done by another agency, Megan needs proof on paper.
3.  HIPAA training including completing the quiz
4.  Introduction to the philosophy and mission of NHPC

We currently have two day scheduled for skin tests, Mon. Feb. 25, from 945am-1145, or Mon. March 11, from 9am-11 at the NHPC office.  All tests must be read between 48-72 hours so people would have to return on Wed. or Thurs. to have them checked.  Those who come to the next meeting on March 14 can have their March 11th test read just before the meeting. If you can’t make either of these dates you need to schedule with the office on your own. It would have to be a Mon.- Wed so you could get them read from 48-72 hours. A question was asked about helping someone in the solarium if not authorized. If it is just a one time thing, maybe helping move pots out, it is OK. Many questions came up about HIPAA and confidentiality. When you have your update by Megan please ask any questions you may have. Those who did not attend today need to come to one of the spring new gardener orientations (April 25 or May 4, at 10am). If you can’t do that, contact Megan to make arrangements, and in the meantime send in your HIPAA quiz.

Diana Watt reminded people that work will continue on the gazebo this year. Screws have been added to the lower part of the structure and still need to be added to the top. After that is complete the structure will be re-stained.  The railing on the porch off the solarium needs to be replaced due to poor structure with nails. At some point there will be a back-up generator added to the house. This may limit parking access and any gardening surrounding that. The gutter repair off the back porch is completed. We will need to move the standing bed north and place the rain barrel on the ground.
New:     All rain barrels placed last fall need to be leveled for stability.

Keys to the house and our sign-in book may be relocated to the garage. This would require a key for the garage from outside. Decisions will be made on this as we begin to get items out of the garage in the spring.  Loni mentioned that fencing for the entry walkway needs to be put back by the irrigation people to avoid cutting lines.

Submitted 2/23 Loni Shapiro
