Gardens Founded in 2001 - Home in 2002

The garden began in 2001 with the help of Norm Erickson, a Northland Hospice volunteer, at the corner of Switzer Canyon Drive and Turquoise. At that time the home had not been completed but a beautiful sign was placed on the corner. Norm continued to work on the beds on the east side of the sidewalk along Switzer Canyon Drive and in front of the home, until 2008. The rest of the gardens were developed by a core of Coconino County Master Gardeners initially led by Laura Davis and since 2007 by Loni Shapiro.

The garden crew is active from April-October and sometimes in November weather permitting. Work happens weekly throughout the garden season on Monday and Thursday mornings from 8:00 am-12:00 pm. It also is scheduled for one Saturday a month from April through October. Cancellations due to weather will be posted by 6:00 am of the workday on this blog. You must attend a spring orientation to the garden and Northland Hospice & Palliative Care in order to work. A summary of the work that has been done is included on the blog. Look for weekly postings on this blog during the garden season.

Meeting/Workday 3/20/12

Thanks to all who came to our meeting workday on Tuesday 3/20 (Karen Kent, Cynthia Davis, Peggy Sheldon-Scurlock, Judith Chaddock, Laura Davis, Crys Wells, Linda Guarino, Betty Marcus, Julie Holmes). In addition to a brief planning meeting we put together a spring fundraising mailing for Northland Hospice (about 5000 pieces of mail). Seeds will be sent for soliciting funds for the organization. It is similar to the Stay at Home Tea done in the fall. It took longer than we anticipated (8am - 130pm) but we managed to have a good time and eat lots of food while working. A handout was circulated on HIPPA (confidentiality while working in the garden)that all volunteers need to read as a reminder. If you were not present please pick up a brochure the next time you volunteer. We also had seed leftover from the mailing. Stop by the office and pick some up for your home gardens if you need them.

Plans for the start of the season are:
April 19, 9am-12pm First Workday weather permitting
April 21 9am-12pm First Saturday monthly workday
April 30 9am-12pm First Monday workday

We will again try 1 Saturday a month for the summer and need 1 volunteer for each month to supervise any volunteers. These are the dates I need volunteers for supervision and the plant sale:
May 19, 9am-12pm (I am doing a Container Gardening Class that day and will be there from about 1030-12pm but busy with the class.
June 23 7am-10am I need 1-2 people to sit at a table at the Run for Your Life to advertise our Annual Plant Sale.
June 30 10am-2pm I need a minimum of 4 people for the plant sale who will do sales, garden tours, refreshments, and parking.
July 21 9am-12pm
August 18 9am-12pm
September 15 9am-12pm

We will no doubt have other special workdays for groups but they are not scheduled as yet.

Watch next week for an update on other info from our meeting.

Thanks,
Loni
