Gardens Founded in 2001 - Home in 2002

Echinacea - Photo by Laura Davis

The garden began in 2001 with the help of Norm Erickson, a Northland Hospice volunteer, at the corner of Switzer Canyon Drive and Turquoise. At that time the home had not been completed but a beautiful sign was placed on the corner. Norm continued to work on the beds on the east side of the sidewalk along Switzer Canyon Drive and in front of the home, until 2008. The rest of the gardens were developed by a core of Coconino County Master Gardeners initially led by Laura Davis and since 2007 by Loni Shapiro.

The garden crew is active from April-October and sometimes in November weather permitting. Work happens weekly throughout the garden season on Monday and Thursday mornings from 8:00 am-12:00 pm. It also is scheduled for one Saturday a month from April through October. Cancellations due to weather will be posted by 6:00 am of the workday on this blog. You must attend a spring orientation to the garden and Northland Hospice & Palliative Care in order to work. A summary of the work that has been done is included on the blog. Look for weekly postings on this blog during the garden season.

Dave Hill again wants to make adonation. We will give him the option of either a new table & chairs or anarbor for the MMG. The current table we have has become dangerous (fallingapart). We need some idea of cost forthe arbor from Laura. Whichever one is not purchased we will raise funds for atthe plant sale this year.
f. Goalsfor 2012
1. Plant seedlings in the spring in thenewly fitted greenhouse. Plant more jobs tears, herbs, veggies. Add a tile floor? Seedlingswill probably be planted in Kim Costian style medium where water is wicked fromtrays as we don’t have tile yet. Goal is to plant some veggies, herbs, andannual to be used in garden. Loni is ordering from the CSA for herselfand may share some of those plants for the garden. Consensus was that we needprofessional help to put in a tile floor – may not be until after plant sale sowon’t be functional until next year.
2. Set up new chair swing – enlarge pad in back of home. Do we want it in front of the home? Lonineeds to check with the house manger on if and where we could put the swing infront of the house. If not, we will expand the pad in back of the house nearthe sun porch to accommodate the swing.
4. Continue work on redoing the frontbeds including drip lines
Focuson bed directly in front of the house this year (south of door) . A meeting is set for 1/31 at 1pm at KarenKent’s home to do some planning for this bed. Kay may be able to join us.
5. Continue planting and create signsfor the Michael Moore Native Medicinal Garden - 2group trips needed – collecting native plants and flat malpais rock A couple of special workdays will be set upfor gathering rock (need permit for near Kelly Canyon) and native plants.Sheila Murray from the Arb will help with gathering areas and appropriatetechniques. We could try to use Americorp or CREC for these workdays. Otheritems on Laura’s agenda for year:
Signs (1 large and 3 small) for the garden
Red sand for the middle area – may be able to get at the Flagstaff Landscape Company just past the mall.
Reworking the drip
Dedication
Possible entry in the Native Plant Society Garden Contest
6. Hold a 3rd Annual Plant and Garden Sale withthe goal of adding to the sustainability of the garden(more rainwater collection) and new outside table/umbrella and or arbor for MMG
Date in June to bedetermined. Look for advertising with the summer run depending on date. Loniwill check with Brandon.
7. Continue other fundraising activities (note cards, jewelry, sachets, bricks, Warner’s).Sachets did not all sell last year, but we may continue to make them as giveaways and gift with purchase. We will probably add photo magnets this year andsee how they do.
8. Enter the Native Plant Contest (front ½ circle, MMG?) – We will try to enter something in the NPC –probably front ½ circle.
9. County Fair Display but no entries – Some resistance to entries last year from garden (not personalgarden’s). Loni will work with CMGA and fair superintendents to see if they cancome up with a category for MG projects. We need someone to take more photosand to help with redoing our poster.
10. Work with the city on revising thecorner garden with the new FUTS trail and sidewalk with goal completionby September - 10th Anniversary – Not sure when this will happen but Loni will continue to check with thedirector on dates. Loni will get the name of the city coordinator also to checkwith them.
11. Continue articles for the Daily Sun and the blog (addarticle on bulbs and MMG for newspaper) Loni will be doingan article on bulbs in the fall and has asked Laura to do something on the MMG.
12. Update educational materials
Lookat seasonal scavenger hunts (new Master Gardener?) – Loni would like to have 2 of these – summer/fall for the season. Needsa volunteer (maybe MG) to do this.

Completeyearly book for house on garden activities for 2011 (done) and begin 2012 (Loni Shapiro – need gardenphotos) – Loni is often too busy to takephotos. Please bring your cameras when you can and take photos.
ReviseWish List Book (all gardeners contribute to this) – Info shared will e-mail to all for corrections. In the meantime thebook is on the entry table at OW. Small items for FG were shared but theconsensus was that animals frequent this garden and they would most likelydisappear or be damaged by them or children. Loni will talk with Laura aboutthis.
Offera spring class on “Container Gardens” – Loni Shapiro – Loni will check with Brandon to see if there is enough time toadvertise this. The class is always helpful in getting our containers in thegarden planted.
